One Year Ago...

I was still pregnant. Today is the last ever day I'll be able to say that. My belly was huge and I was completely oblivious to the fact that I was already in active labor...I would find out later in the day at my 36-week checkup and it would stun me. But on this morning a year ago I was just enjoying my day off from work, padding around in a house that I hated and wondering if it would ever get finished and sold. I was holding my belly low on the left side, where I could feel Topher's hiccups at least once a day. I was running to the bathroom at least every 30 minutes and still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I had a real, live, blinking baby inside of me. I wish back then I could have seen a picture of Topher now. I wish I could have seen what I was creating.
I'm going to be this many!
Today we are packing up and heading down to Kansas City to celebrate Topher's birthday with all 10 of his cousins. I went shopping for his presents last night and it surprised me how much I wanted to buy him everything. I'm usually not like that, but right now I feel like I want to give him the whole world. I settled on just a few fun toys, but as I was leaving I passed a clearance rack of diapers. They were all in his size, and all half off. Well, I couldn't pass that up so I bought every box they had. (I'm admittedly a bit of a diaper snob and will only use Huggies or--more rarely--Pampers, which we usually can't afford.) I think Topher had more fun with the big boxes than any other gift I could have bought him.
We've also recently discovered Topher's love of pillows. If you just throw a couple pillows on the ground, he will roll around, laugh, dive right in. It's adorable.
Topher, a year ago I had no idea who you were or what you would be like. Thank you for surpassing all our expectations and helping us become a little family. You went from being a bump in my tummy to being our universe, and we wouldn't have it any other way. We love you so much.

3-2-1, One!

That's right, just three more days until my baby is a year old. It feels like the biggest milestone in the world, like running through the red tape at the end of a long, long race. I can't tell you how many different people told us how many different ways that this first year would be over before we knew it, that if we blinked it would be gone. They lied, every one of them. It was a very long, very hard year that felt more like a decade. But here we are, still alive, despite all the many days I thought we wouldn't survive this baby. And he wasn't even a bad baby! We just found it unusually difficult to adapt to Life With Baby. But thank heavens we got the one we did, because he's turning into the most amazing little boy. We are SO lucky to have him. Topher laughs often, he's curious about the world, he loves animals, and his appetite has always been impressive. Yesterday he even started patting my back when I picked him up, almost as if to say, "Good job, Mommy. I'm turning out okay." The year mark is a BIG deal. You can turn them around so they are facing forward in the car (which we've already done and it seems to suit him a lot better), you wean them off of formula and onto whole milk (which is a lot cheaper), they can basically eat anything (so we can stop avoiding peanuts and honey like the plague), and it usually means big things are coming soon. Okay, so he can't walk yet, or talk much, but we know it won't be long. I can hand him a piece of food and he can feed himself, or I can hand him a sippy cup, and he can drink. He can open cabinets and drawers, and he can pick out toys and books. He can pin down the cat (he hasn't quite mastered the "gentle" concept yet) and he can call people by holding down random buttons on my phone (that has happened quite a few times now.) He can surprise us more, that's for sure. The point is, so much of this last year has been us helping him physically survive. But now, he's entering this phase where he's becoming a real little person. I mean, he's still all baby, don't get me wrong. One year old used to sound big to me, but now I see that it's just a bigger version of a baby, with more opportunities to get into messes. Today I had to take away from his kung-fu grasp a spray bottle of cleaner, a fluorescent lightbulb, and a stick of deodorant, just to name a few things. He really is becoming more independent, and I love to watch that happening, yet at the same time I still hold him most of the day, he needs cuddles at night and his bottle...he's still very much our little baby. Even though it was a hard year for us, Topher was worth all of it, but we can't say for sure that we'll ever do it again (ask us again in several years). We feel too lucky that it turned out as well as it did, all things considering. Maybe we're not the world's most natural parents, maybe we don't do things the way other parents do, and maybe we're making too big a deal out of the little things that other people seem to be able to brush off. But all I have to do is see that big grin of Topher's and I know that whatever we're doing is working. We're all making it as a family, and we're all learning our roles as we go. Some days I look at Topher and I have a panic moment of "Wow, I'm too young to be a mom!" even though I'm obviously not at all. Some days I feel like he was dropped into our house from a stork and I just have no idea what I'm supposed to do with him at that moment. I definitely don't have all the answers. But even with those moments of weakness, I know that Topher was supposed to be mine. If you put me in a pitch-dark room with a thousand babies, I would find mine without any hesitation. I know his smell, I know the feel of his hair when I kiss his head, I know his voice and his grasp and his laugh. I will never know how we made something so beautiful, but everything about him is burned into my soul in a way that nothing else ever has been. His big blue eyes and his gestures, his signature snarl and the way he says "bup" for puppy and "dat" for cat, the way he snores and the way he wakes up smiling. He's amazing, and I am the one lucky enough to call him mine. I am so in love with him it hurts. It has been an endless year, I have to say, but I cannot argue with the results. Topher, we love you so much, and in such a big way. We are so, so, SO proud of you. Whatever you become, whatever you accomplish, we love that we lived through the beginning with you. Here's to your last three days as a "baby" and your momentous transition into the world of becoming a "big boy" you gorgeous little man, you. As the saying goes...we had each other, and then we had you, and then we had everything. --KC

Night Eyes at the Zoo

It was a fun, busy weekend. My sister Regina came to visit with her husband Justin and their girls Audree (6) and Juliette (2). Bless their hearts for not caring that we don't have an actual guest room for them. They camped out in the living room like champs, and the girls were delighted to be in a house with animals. Topher was able to get a small dose of life with siblings, but we feel pretty positive that one child is still the right number for us. :) Topher playing makeup with Audree and Juliette Is there any resemblance between Topher and Juliette?? A rare picture of Juliette with her eyes open...such a cutie!! On Saturday we went to Night Eyes at the Des Moines Zoo, which is where you go trick-or-treating at the zoo. I thought it was a great activity for the kids. There weren't a lot of animals out, but we were able to see a few up close and it was a lot of fun. Topher and daddy about to go into the zoo Topher and mommy all bundled up for a gray day Regina, Justin, Juliette (in hiding) and a beautiful little cowgirl named Audree TJ and Topher petting the goats My worst nightmare...I was trying not to hurl while taking this picture :) Lions up close More sleepy lions Family photo #1 Family photo #2 Topher enjoying his spoils (we didn't actually give him candy, he just chewed on the wrapper) We also made it to the Cheesecake Factory (I would HIGHLY recommend the Godiva variety) and the mall where the kids played in the playground.
Topher was a busy boy, climbing on the caterpillar and all over
It was a great, great weekend and we didn't have to say goodbye for long because we'll be heading to Kansas City this next weekend for Topher's birthday. I cannot believe that Topher will be a year old in only FIVE days. I'm so proud of him. He did a great job all weekend, no matter where we took him, never throwing a fit and falling asleep every time he got in the car. I love him facing forward. :) He even helped me finish up the laundry after our guests had left. Happy helper...I love that smile
Thanks to Regina and Justin for braving that long car ride with the kids. We'll be doing the same thing this weekend and then we'll be even. :) We had a great time and the house seems a little empty today.
Love,
KC and TJ

Snow and Cheesecake

Saturdays are sacred around here. We love them. We wait for them all week long, and then we relish them all day. We try never to schedule too much (or anything for that matter) on Saturdays, and we love just seeing where the days will take us. They seem to last longer that way. We woke up to a surprise this morning: snow. It's October 10th, and it was snowing. Can you believe that?? Looking down at our driveway Looking across the street at the snow collecting on the rooftops Well, this inspired us to go buy Topher a new winter coat, but we couldn't find one we liked in the right size (he's fine for now, we just layer him up good, and he seems to like the colder weather, which is surprising for a baby who would live his life naked if he could.) Another first today: facing his car seat forward. Guess what? He seemed a lot less fussy. He even dozed off watching the traffic ahead! (Our car rides usually consist of me sitting in the back seat beside him, expending all my energy on being silly so that he won't have a fit. It's exhausting.) We hope this helps him become a better traveler. Such a big boy! Where were we headed? To the Cheesecake Factory. We've been meaning to go have a celebration dinner for moving into the new house for ages now, and we finally got around to it. We love that restaurant. They asked us if we would like a complimentary infant plate and we said sure. Out came a perfectly sliced banana flanked by two varieties of bread. It was adorable. Topher looked it over and dug right into the bread. What other restaurant would do that, and with such presentation?? Is this all for me? Good thing I only ordered the lunch portion. Well then it was time to go back home (Topher dozed off AGAIN in the car!) and resume our lazy Saturday. Topher decided to use my pudding cup and create a "pudding painting" on the coffee table. It might have been a work of art, but Sassy was apparently unimpressed.
How does it look?
Later, Topher was destroying towers faster than TJ could build them. I love watching the two of them together. TJ is such a good daddy, and Topher has the greatest laugh I've ever heard.
Another lovely, let's-go-where-the-wind-takes-us sort of Saturday. The snow was an October surprise, our cheesecakes were enormous, and we are now warm and happy (and pleasantly stuffed full of decadent calories) in our townhome. Perfect.

Happy Retirement!

TJ's dad, Terry, has retired from John Deere after 30 years! A couple weeks ago we went to his "farewell party" at work and Topher wiggled into his John Deere shirt for the occasion. It was a very tight fit because he got the shirt for Easter and it was sized 6 months. He's wearing 18-24 month shirts now, so we were lucky to get it on him. Fortunately, it was a big hit and everyone loved it. Topher was very proud of his grandpa and cooperated well for a family photo. Then last weekend, Terry and Kathy had a huge retirement party at their house. The shed was all dressed up and looked great. There was a great turnout, despite some colder weather. Topher had to be all bundled up, but he enjoyed the impromptu play group of kids his age. He spent most of the afternoon in his stroller, making the rounds and showing off his gorgeous little self. Happy retirement, Grandpa! Bye bye, John Deere! --KC

New Videos

Here's a couple new videos of the little man. This first one was taken yesterday and is just me talking to Topher. He has quite a lot to say and it's fun to hear him make meaningful noises such as "mama", "dada", "ba" (ball), and "pup" (puppy). He also waves with gusto and shows off how he loves to jangle the car keys. This next video was taken last night. Topher LOVES to splash around in the bath and he kept splashing TJ, who would shake off the water which made Topher laugh and laugh. Even Sassy had to come see what all the commotion was about. We hope you enjoy watching Topher as he grows. In less than 3 weeks, he'll be a year old (more on THAT later)! --KC

All in a Day

A messy day, that is. I think we've almost reached "toddler-hood", that glorious stage that means you run around and find your child by following the trail of messes. Even though Topher isn't walking yet, he can still go just about anywhere he wants to go (and do anything he wants to do, even if you might think that some of those things would be out of his reach). He likes to start his day by pulling out all the cables we don't use and sorting through them. I'm going to need some electrical tape to get this up to code. After that, it's into the kitchen to get into the cabinet. Literally, all the way in. I'll get everything out, mom, don't worry. I'm making some interesting finds. What? Was this not okay? Then it's onto the other side of the kitchen where all the drawers need to be opened and the contents removed. Oh boy, this drawer is definitely going to need to be cleaned out. I'll get it. After that, it's a long but fast climb upstairs where Topher makes a jewel of a discovery. The toilet paper roll. Oh dear, there is way too much paper on this roll. Fire hazard. I'm on it. Yep, that outta do it. Problem solved. Someone is going to need to refill this for me. I'm getting out of here before someone sees the mess I made! And finally, after all that work is done, the baby takes a much-deserved nap. With Sassy watching guard. Good girl, Sassy. Look at that, he really CAN hold still. :) All in a day. A busy, messy, run-around kind of day. --KC
