Un-blogging

I don't know why I let this happen.  Whenever my blog is up-to-date my personal journal suffers.  Then whenever my journal is perfectly caught up and packed with the details of my life, I forget the blogging world even exists.

I become an un-blogger.  And when I'm un-blogging, it means that my friends and faraway family fall further and further out of the loop of our daily lives, and I don't want that to happen.

Luckily, I can easily sum up the last couple of months in one short sentence: it's winter.

This tiny sentence carries on its shoulders the weight of many days spent watching movies, playing Chutes and Ladders, making cookies, staring outside at the endless white stacks of heavy snow and wondering if our grass still exists under it all.  It implies that we have been hunkering down, venturing out only when necessary and hoping that each new week's forecast will show an upward tilt to the temperature trend.  It means the most of my free time is spent reading and daydreaming about how beautiful I will make my home look this Spring.  It's funny how an unusually long and snowy winter can make you determined to erase it with the quantity of flowers you plan to pour over every available pot and perch.  I have mentally painted my shutters, added hanging flowers and an inviting chair to the porch, planted our vegetable garden, and opened the sandbox for the sunny season.

Topher doesn't seem to mind this long and dreary winter.  Every day he asks to play in the snow.  Every day we spend about 15 minutes getting his snow pants, boots, coat, mittens, hat, and scarf on.  Every day I drag him back inside when I feel wet and cold, or when I stop feeling anything altogether.  Stripping down is much faster--5 minutes max.  Then I make hot cocoa (Topher's has an ice cube in it because he insists on warm cocoa, not hot) and try to ignore the pile of tangled clothes and dripping snow in front of the door.  It is never long before he asks me when we can go out again.

I'm lucky he has preschool to distract him three times a week.

Topher is actually thriving in preschool this year.  Academically he is performing at a Kindergarten level in most categories (and he still has another year of preschool to go!)  His teacher is utterly unfrazzled, no matter how much chaos swirls around her.  She has the perfect no-nonsense and happy attitude to connect with Topher.  Mostly, we are proud of his social improvement this year.  He is a quiet child, but he is learning how to play with others and make friends and deal with problems and use his voice.  My proudest moment this year came when Topher was chosen to be the "star student of the week."  There is a poster we had to fill out covering all things Topher, and in the very middle was a giant star that read, "I am a star because..."  I asked Topher, "Why are you a star?  What makes you special?"  He answered without even stopping to mull it over.  His lispy voice declared, "Because I am a child of God."  I wrote in his answer while fighting a heart bulging at its seams.  The next day his teacher said that he presented his poster wonderfully and that he had remembered every one of his answers.  He even demonstrated his special talent, hopping on one leg, to the whole class.  Once again TJ and I were left wondering how we ever earned the privilege of raising this heart-wrenching little boy.

I thought the other day when I turned the calendar to March that the see-saw was definitely tipping towards Spring.  It has snowed twice since then as if Winter saw all those calendars flipping him away and wanted to squelch any ideas of being defeated.  But we know Spring is coming.  It doesn't look like it or feel like it under this white blanket of sky and snow, but we know it is.  And until it peeks out, I will try to appreciate what I have: a son who wears his snug size 4T snow pants and even snugger size 9 snow boots.  Because I will never get him back.  He will only be immortalized in the pictures, videos, and mental images I store.  And he is beautiful.  More beautiful than Spring will ever be.

A Very Merry Christmas

We love Christmas.

Even if it means driving to Kansas City to see my family and then rushing back to be home in time for Santa to find us on Christmas Eve.

Even if it means scrambling to make cookies at the last minute before Topher's bedtime.

And then waiting patiently while Topher paints "just one more picture" for Santa.
And then wants mommy to paint one, too.

And even when Topher wakes up at 5:30am wanting to go downstairs, we still love Christmas.

Because hearing Topher gasp when he sees that his cookies were eaten, and a pile of presents left in Santa's wake...well, that's just the best part.

I especially loved watching Topher find his presents from Santa by looking for the "twirly, swirly writing."

And we even love sharing Christmas with the animals.  Sassy got a can of tuna (her favorite) and Squash got a new cat toy.

And even if we packed up our tree on Christmas afternoon and breathed a sigh of relief that the busiest time of year was finally over,

we still love Christmas.

Halloween 2012

Halloween was COLD this year.  Even so, TJ was super excited to try out his scarecrow costume on unsuspecting children.  He got all suited up, put out our candy with a "please take one" sign, put a mop down his back, and then artfully slumped:

It was a TOTAL riot.  He wouldn't scare everyone, it was only every once in a while.  We watched the first boy from down the street and when TJ grumbled he jumped a mile.  Hilarious.  It was total dedication, too.  He must have been slumped over for almost an hour and a half.  Plus kids were poking him and one threw a piece of candy at him to see if he was real.  Best Halloween ever.

While daddy was busy doing that, Topher and Emma made the rounds together.  Aren't they the cutest?!?

The 2012 haul:

And some hot coca to warm us all back up.

Great night.

I love being married to a scarecrow with a superhero son.

This is the life.

This is Getting Shameful

I'm still here!  I realize that blogs have dropped off dramatically in number but there are still things worth noting happening here in our little corner of Ankeny, Iowa.

First I will back up a month or so and post pics from Topher's ~spooky~ Halloween birthday party!  (Then hopefully the momentum will continue and I'll post some more soon.)

Decorating the house, inside and out:

Add one birthday boy who happens to be a total ham:

 One totally awesome graveyard cake:

An interesting party menu complete with zombie fingers (smokies), "tombstone" pizzas, poisoned herbs (salad), witch's brew (sherbert punch), and 8-legged cupcakes (spider themed):

And then just throw in the kids, all in costumes of course!!:

It was so much fun and Topher will always remember the time he had a Batman, a Spiderman, a princess, a bumblebee, two Angry Birds, a pirate (mommy), and a scarecrow (daddy) at his birthday party.

Yep, we have a FOUR year old now.  That's a child, not a baby, just for the record.

Well, he can still be my little baby.

How blessed we've been to have had four years with this special little boy.  We love you Topher!

Where have we been?

That's a great question.  The answer is not-so-great: busy.  Busy with preschool and babysitting and planning Topher's birthday party and my sister's baby shower.  Busy with church and social dinners and keeping the house from looking like a war zone.  Busy with nearly chopping off my finger in a blender and with Topher finding more ways to keep his knees continually scraped.

Just life, in all its doldrums and routines and surprises.

This past weekend TJ's immediate family wanted to get away from it all, and they decided that Decorah, Iowa was the place for some peace and quiet and natural beauty.

It was a long car ride, but that's why knitting was invented.  Topher was excited to bring his preschool homework along with him.  His assignment was to go on a nature walk with his family and collect all the treasures he found in a baggie.  So on Saturday while the rest of the family went on a bike ride, we went hiking in the Twin Springs park.

As we walked along the paved road, we saw a deep ravine stretching up to a bridge high above us.  It was obvious that there was a path on top of the bluffs but it was not obvious how to get up there.  So we left the path and hiked the ravine.  It was even steeper than it looked, but Topher kept insisting that he could do it.

And by golly, he really could.

The views were very pretty up at the top of our "mountain".

The hike back down wasn't half bad either.  Hiking is probably my most favorite thing to do outdoors.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised it ended this way.

Or that our hike was followed by a three-hour nap (from the boy who doesn't take those anymore).

On Sunday we packed up to go home.  Topher poses here with his *McDonald's happy meal toy that became his best friend over the weekend.

*Disclaimer: we do not go near McD's--or any fast food--unless we are on a car trip.  No exceptions.

And even though it was a fun weekend, it felt so good and so right to come home.

So there you have it.  We are still alive.  Just busy climbing mountains and other such adventures.
